Another year comes to an end and we are on the threshold of another new year. So much has happened around the world as well as our own land. So much has been said as against less being accomplished. How ever many preparations are underway to usher in 2011. Dancing, drinking, crackers and fireworks and parties will be most of the ways how some would usher in the New Year, whilst most Christians will be in church. As all these happens a majority of people will begin the new year in a state of hopelessness just as they began 2010 – without food or a home, some in refugee camps and in prison, wondering if the new year will be anything different from the last?
To many this section of people are immaterial or even don’t exist in this world. However as Christians we fail to understand that every human being is created in the image of God. It is the actions of human beings which have brought division and segregation within the human community.
So can this situation change. Will there be more people in need at the end of 2011 or will that number reduce? Can this situation be reversed? Or do we do all we can to preserve the status quo? If an attempt is made, yes, this situation can reverse. For that every individual in this world especially our own country has a moral responsibility towards those who are in need. It is easy to blame governments or organizations and to stay put carrying on our own lives regardless of what goes on. It easy to speak about the all that happens around, make our analysis and carry on regardless.
So what can we do to reverse this situation? It will mean that we have to disturb the status quo. It means we should become extraordinary in an ordinary, willing to go down on our knees to bend down and give a hand to those in need. The best example that we have is Jesus. His service climaxed at the last supper when he washed the disciple’s feet revealing his humility and bore the nails for his actions. His actions for the needy disturbed the establishment. Yet he was not deterred.
To many “Christian” has become a social status. They are proud of the churches they go to, the prayer cells and bible study groups they attend and the type of people they associate with. The life of a Christian should be a life of action. The life of Jesus was a life of action. Can we make a difference by reaching out to the needy? Can we make a difference by sharing what we love with the needy? Can we make a difference caring for the needy? Or do we feel ashamed to have with us all those who have no place in society?
May the year 2011 be an extraordinary year for all of us a year of caring, sharing and reaching out to bring back into the life of the community all those who have no place in society.
“…….. if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we have not seen?” I John 4:20b
