Prayer requests for the Election of the 16th Bishop of Colombo
1. Pray for our Diocese. Thanking God for the diversity, the rich culture and resources of the diocese, the churches spread across the island – in cities, up in the hills, along the coast, in little villagers and in homes. Thank God for the growth God has given the Diocese. We thank God for the different ministries of the diocese, and for responding in different ways to the needs of people. We thank God for all who serve and have served the diocese as priests and bishops, for their contribution towards the growth of the church, acknowledging the role of the laity.
2. As we prepare for the election of a new Bishop, we pray for all the candidates. Pray that they may continue to wait upon God, to hear his small voice and discern his call to this leadership position. That they will be guided by the Holy Spirit to respond to God’s expectation and purposes when they are selected to be Bishop. Pray for all those who would like their favourites to become the Bishop, that they would bring out the good in their candidates.
3. Prayers for the members of the Diocesan council – the clergy and the laity. For those who travel from far. For those who may not know of the candidates. That they will be prayerful and wise in their thinking.
4. For the proposer and seconder of every candidate, for those who will make speeches. That they may take this opportunity to bring to the knowledge of council, the qualities and the characteristics of their candidates, their gifts and talents and how the diocese would benefit from them becoming bishop.
5. For the chairpersons of the house of clergy and house of Laity. For them to receive an extra portion of God's strength, for God’s wisdom and guidance. That they may be patient in their listening, wise in their thinking and have the courageous and unbiased in their responses and decisions.
6. Pray that this election will not bring hatred and division within the diocese, but it will be one where we will receive leadership that will infuse fresh thinking into the missional journey with a renewed vision, making the church relevant to the times ahead.
