"Hate sin - Do Good" - July 2020
Thought shared at the first of the month service.
We begin a new month today. The month of June has given us many experiences. When we look back I am sure we can all give thanks to God for his love and mercy and goodness. Our experience of God and our relationship with him will help us step into the month of July with confidence.
Amos helps us in this. "Hate sin" he says, "seek good and love good". What is good and sin differs in our world today.
When you choose good, when you seek good, and when you love good, the chances are that you maybe rejected. What is good disturbs the comfortable life of sin. The good that one seeks may not be "good" as good is defined by many in different ways to suit them. While Good (טוֹב - towb) in the OT covers much and is well captured in Genesis 1, the good that Amos speaks of is about the moral good and this doesn't go hand in glove with the ways of the world.
But Jesus helps you to do good. He sets you free from the bondage of sin as he did to the two demon possessed men. To hold on to sin is to be like the people of Gadarense who asked Jesus to leave after they saw two of their people freed from the demons. But you must must be like the man free from the demon. Be seated at the feet of Jesus as said in the gospel of Luke. It is when you sit at the feet of Jesus that you are enlightened of the good that God wants you to seek, choose and do.
The choice is before you, for you to decide. May you have a blessed month seeking, loving and doing Good. God bless you all.
Collect for the day
Almighty God, you have broken the tyranny of sin and have sent the Spirit of your Son into our hearts whereby we call you Father: give us grace to dedicate our freedom to your service, that we and all creation may be brought to the glorious liberty of the children of God; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
